Beautiful People – Kenna

Beautiful People is back, thanks to the lovely Sky and Cait. While it may look frivolous, Beautiful People is really a very simple, very helpful exercise that, as an author, helps keep me accountable to my characters and frequently divulges things about them I wasn’t previously aware of. In short – it’s awesome, peeps.

So, I was going to simply ask the questions to Kenna, but I think I’ll ask the questions to two of the main characters, to make for a more decent-sized post. Sit back, relax, and enjoy learning about Kenna and Einar along with me! (Next time, it will probably be Farrien and Alaric, so keep an eye out!)

What is their full name and is there a story behind why they got it? cheeryo

every living thing deserved a name to know itself by. It could not be too long; she was a small thing, and a long name would only weigh her down. Besides, he did not possess an abundance of imagination… The sun had risen in the sky above the Longwood, shedding pale beams of light through the canopy, when the name came to him. In his mother language, it meant both learn and teach – something for the babe to aspire to. Not a sleepy child, she opened her eyes in time to hear her name spoken for the first time.

“Kenna.”

How old are they, and where were they born?

Kenna was born in Dallystone, a large trading village in Alacros. She has just turned twenty, and Einar is taking her back into Dallystone to see how well she spreads her wings in the human world.

 Describe their physical appearance.

She looks very delicate and lovely, but being raised amid forty male elf-warriors will do things to a person. She has dressed like a boy most of her life and tends to keep her hair tightly braided. Large violet eyes, pale hair, and an elder-mark on the side of her face make it nearly impossible for her not to stand out.

Describe your character’s personality first in one word, and then elaborate with a few sentences.

In one word….nobody’s personality can fit in one word, but I’ll give it a shot: Overflowing. She gives everything one hundred and ten percent.

By the time she reached the first day of her twentieth year, Kenna was as open and honest as a child’s laugh, as mischievous and free-willed as a spring wind, and while she was no match for the stronger, faster, more experienced warriors around her, she could hold her own against most in a fair fight.

She had never left the Longwoods, and she had no real desire to. Hallbjörn was her home and everything she knew, and she was content and happy to spend her days hunting with Grimalfur – who had taken a liking to her soon after she began to articulate words – or finding new things to build and make with Baldur, or learning new ways to cripple a man with Ingimar. She never left with Einar – he never offered to take her, and she never requested to go.

What theme song(s) fit their personality and story arc?

Mumford & Sons with Birdy – Learn Me Right.

Which one of the seven deadly sins describes your character?

It would probably have to be pride, although it isn’t intentional pride. She’s been spoiled since before she could speak her own name, and elves teach that deceit is the root of all evil; therefore she’s spoiled and bluntly honest. It’s a volatile combination.

If they were an element (fire, water, earth, air), which one would they be?

Fire. Something akin to this comes into play later in Kenna, actually.

What is their favorite word?

If she did have a favorite word, it would be heima; the elvish word for a home, or a safe place. It can be a location or a person, but when you are with them, you feel as if you belong. She considers Einar her heima.

Who’s one person they really miss? (It could be someone who’s passed away, or someone they’re not close to anymore, or someone who’s moved away.)

As of yet, nobody she loves has died; the most ‘missing’ she has ever done is when Einar leaves the Longwoods for weeks at a time.

What sights, sounds, and smells remind them of that person?

This is tricky, and I’m going to have to say nearly everything. He raised her, so most things make her think of him, at least briefly.

mads clash of the titans– Einar –

What is their full name and is there a story behind why they got it?

‘Einar’ is a name meaning warrior, or he who fights alone.

How old are they, and where were they born?

Einar is one of the oldest elves in Hallbjörn; he has seen more than eight hundred summers. He was born in the North; it was not yet called anything else back then.

 Describe their physical appearance.

Weathered, strong and ancient; an oak tree in a field of grass.

Describe your character’s personality first in one word, and then elaborate with a few sentences.

In one word, I would say Einar is gruff. He tends toward silence, doesn’t raise his voice except in battle, and has a quiet, sometimes aloof way of caring for Kenna.

Kenna kept quiet for the first quarter of an hour, until they reached the thinner parts of the forest where more light filtered down through the branches and grass grew instead of moss. Then she looked over and asked, “How come you’re taking me now?”

“You’re old enough now,” he said passively. “I won’t have to tie a rope around your neck like a dog to keep you from running away.”

What theme song(s) fit their personality and story arc?

Ramin Djawadi – House Baratheon

Which one of the seven deadly sins describes your character?

None of them; if he had a separate deadly sin, it would probably be the taste for killing he has developed over the years. He does his best to stay away from fighting because blood calls to him, and he is very good at shedding it.

If they were an element (fire, water, earth, air), which one would they be?

Water. His personality is much like a river flowing toward a waterfall; calm and serene, with a strong undercurrent, then thundering and deadly.

What is their favorite word?

Kenna.

Who’s one person they really miss? (It could be someone who’s passed away, or someone they’re not close to anymore, or someone who’s moved away.)

He has seen most of the people he loved or cared about killed or swept away in the tide of time. His wife and children tore a hole inside him, and Kenna is the first person with the ability to heal that hole.

What sights, sounds, and smells remind them of that person?

He tries not to let his mind slip into memories, but many things remind him of his family – children play-fighting in the street, the scar on his right hand, given to him by his wife when they were sparring; the smell of apples and honey.

  4. This might need to be a book immediately, and then a movie… Yes, that must be so… ;-) In the meantime… I have said it before, I am SO NOT a cliffhangar person, but I will do this… because you grabbed my attention at the very name KENNA. And… because they are very real to me already. Thank you. :-)

    1. Thank you so much! It took a while for me to realize that stories had to have, y’know, ‘plots’ as well as characters. So my stories are still character-driven, but I hope they have a plot, too. XD

  5. Wow, I love the excerpts you put in here. I can imagine exactly Kenna and Einar through your awesome description. I love the fact that she’s grown up around all men and ELVES. Yes. Elves anything is fantastic.
